I bought a new down comforter and a duvet cover from Overstock.com. But being as indecisive as I am about bedding for some reason, I bought them in two separate installments, a couple of hours apart. The shipping is only $1 for each item, but I decided to try and get both delivered for $1. Why? I'm not sure...maybe I need help. Nonetheless, I thought it was pretty funny and so did the boyf. It really wasn't very hard at all. Here's the online chat convo I had with a customer service rep:<br />

This is what I had yesterday:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xXc42DYpFZw/Tmzi-uKWcwI/AAAAAAAABUE/hqaVwVeVPzc/s1600/IMAG0525.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xXc42DYpFZw/Tmzi-uKWcwI/AAAAAAAABUE/hqaVwVeVPzc/s640/IMAG0525.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I am also currently on a diet. Ive been using this website called www.activetrax.com available through my local gym (the YMCA) to keep track of my my exercise regimen and my food! If you have this available at your gym, you should definitely do it (you can check if you do <a href="http://www.activtrax.com/enroll.php">here</a>)! It counts my calories for me and depending on the amount of exercise I've done (or not) that day, gives me the total number of calories I should eat to still keep track of my goal of losing 1lb a week. It also keeps track of my nutrition and tells me if I've had too much cholesterol and not enough protein, etc. My total goal is to lose 8lbs but I'm more concerned with toning my body to the point that I'm satisfied than the number of pounds I lose. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Yesterday, I worked out for an hour at the gym so I had 1400 calories to spend (today, since I didn't go to the gym, I have 1175 calories to spend). So, this is what I had for breakfast on Saturday!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Breakfast (approximations):</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One scrambled egg with onions: 100 cal</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One 8 grain tortilla heated: 100 cal</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A few sauteed potatoes w/cumin seeds, red chilli powder, salt and pepper (DELICIOUS btw): 100 cal</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1 cup of skim milk: 90 cal</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1 banana: 100 cal</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">TOTAL: 490 calories</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">That was about a third of my daily allowance, so I still had 2 meals to go! Also, they say breakfast should be your biggest meal of the day, then lunch, and finally dinner should be the lightest. Counting calories can be a bit difficult to keep up and it requires discipline but it keeps me from overeating (which I do a lot) and even eating for no reason or out of boredom (which I also do a lot). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What do you guys do to keep fit and healthy? </div></div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-46982622584515546092011-09-05T15:30:00.000-07:002011-09-05T15:51:57.548-07:00Happy Labor Day!<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Hope everyone's enjoying the 3-day weekend (if you have one)! I know I am. 2nd best part of 3-day weekends? 4-day weeks. Yessss. 3rd best part? The sales. I did some shopping this weekend. Did you?<br />
<br />
I tried to find some business outfits I could wear to clinical meetings and patient interactions which is at least once a week. Here is some inspiration I have found on <a href="http://pinterest.com/Aki1/">pinterest</a> (these are all in my "Clothes" board). LOVE pinterest, btw.<br />

Two years ago, I didn't care about my nails and I didn't really own very many bottles of nail polish. I had gotten a $7 manicure in Manhattan a couple of times when I lived there but other than that I don't think I felt like I had the time! However, last year, during my difficult and at times miserable year in grad school when all I did was study, I felt like I needed a little pampering. So, I started painting my nails! It was a great way to chill out and make myself feel polished and pretty at the same time. I couldn't afford to go get a manicure regularly so I did it myself at home. This is my current nail polish collection to date:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SIBXz5-h8Ls/TmDfOkgC1qI/AAAAAAAABTQ/cZP4wYGD8H0/s1600/nailpolcoll.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SIBXz5-h8Ls/TmDfOkgC1qI/AAAAAAAABTQ/cZP4wYGD8H0/s640/nailpolcoll.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>As you can see, most of my collection is made up of the NYC brand. This is probably the cheapest nail polish out there and for me it works quite well. You can get them for under $1 at Target most of the time. For a girl like me, who's on a budget, they are perfect and a lot of the brighter colors are quite trendy right now too. The Revlon nail polish on the far left is probably my most expensive (around $4) and my momma bought that one for me =).<br />
<br />
This is the color I'm wearing today, NYC's Times Square Tangerine Creme. It's a bright reddish orange:<br />

<br />
It's really fun and summery and totally trendy right now. Seeing how summer is officially over after this weekend, I decided to wear this color to prolong it as long as possible!!<br />

What's your favorite brand of nail polish? What's your favorite color?</div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-54314864678713469482011-09-01T06:40:00.000-07:002011-09-01T14:03:48.958-07:00Thrifting Fail + What I left behind<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">I went thrifting yesterday for the first time in a few weeks (since school started) and I found diddly squat. It was disappointing but still great to get out and back into a thrift store! I actually enjoyed it a lot. I did find these two items which caught my eye (I left them behind) but I have no idea what they are! I'm guessing some kind of accounting/billing thing? Anyone want to enlighten me?<br />

In case you were curious, the following pictures describe what Irene left around my neighborhood. It got much worse than this around other parts of town so I consider myself pretty lucky. I never lost power or water and though cable tv/internet was gone for a night I have it back today.<br />

I was evacuated out of my city on the Southeastern coast of Virginia. Actually I left before the mandatory evacuation was even called....and I'm so glad I did! Thanks to encouragement of my boyfriend and parents. I kind of wanted to stay to ride out the storm and experience the rush, but it's probably more smart to leave. The storm surge is expected to be up to 9 feet, and living in a flood zone, it just didn't make sense for us to stay. <br />
<br />
Those who are riding out the storm out there, stay safe and Good luck!</div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-4410795763394839742011-08-24T13:35:00.000-07:002011-08-24T13:35:27.560-07:00School is kicking into high gear<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">and I'm afraid I won't have time to do....ANYTHING! I don't want to have that approach though. I'm a bit more mature age-wise than at least half the students and I don't want to fall into the old undergraduate pattern of studying and going to class that so many people do (which is: study all day and night, maybe go to class, get very little sleep and then do the same the next day until the weekend when steam is blown off by getting trashed at a bar). I need to have some semblance of a life outside school. Something to do besides study and I'm going to try my darndest to do it. I mean, I have a boyf and little doggie (this sweet face was waiting for me when I got home)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vA3Aj2cc0do/TlVf0FUde5I/AAAAAAAABRI/MJQxoQGM5_A/s1600/IMG_20110824_162611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vA3Aj2cc0do/TlVf0FUde5I/AAAAAAAABRI/MJQxoQGM5_A/s640/IMG_20110824_162611.jpg" width="478" /></a></div><br />
to take care of and spend time with too. Some (or many...ok, most) medical schools will make it hard for you to do this. However, I think it's important to realize, it's not about the grades. It's about what you learn. In medical school you study for your patient, not your next test. I will not embrace gunner status. I will do the best I can with the resources and time I have and still maintain my relationships and my sanity (and this can apply to anyone who feels busy/overwhelmed/everyone!). <br />
<br />
There are med students in my class who are married and have kids, too. More power to them. It's gonna be rough but if they can get through it and still make time for their kids, I can get through it too.<br />
<br />
My pretty flowers need my time too! (this sunflower just bloomed - after FOREVER)<br />

In a corner in my living room there's a sweet little table where I can look out the window, bask in the sunshine, and not worry about a thing =)<br />

By the way, that's the tiny little sewing machine made for babies that I wrote about many moons ago!</div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-65435273594634182452011-08-20T18:28:00.000-07:002011-08-24T13:37:25.713-07:00It's Saturday<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">and I'm still tired. <b>Yesterday I took the hippocratic oath and received my white coat</b>. I nearly lost it on stage and started tearing but I got a hold of myself. It's been a long journey 'til this point and I guess it's overwhelming that I'm finally here. Most of my class is straight out of undergrad - maybe they lost the sense of accomplishment and significance of the moment. But it was definitely not lost on me. I'm three years out and it took me 2 attempts to get into medical school. I entered the workforce for a couple of years and even got a Master's degree on the way. Boy do I understand the privileged position I'm in. My parents came down for the ceremony and I was glad to share it with them and the boyf. It feels like my life is finally beginning!<br />
<br />
I missed a thrifty Thursday edition this past Thursday...my apologies! But, medical school kind of took over. I did go thrifting today but sadly, I found nothing. I went to a couple new stores but it seemed like <b>everything was way over-priced</b>. Sometimes I want to go up to management and say, "Do you realize you run a thrift store and not a designer boutique?" I mean where do some of these prices come from? I should have taken a couple of pictures but I definitely was not expecting a beat up side table to cost me $100. Frustrating doesn't even begin to describe the situation.<br />
<br />
In better news, <b>I was finally able to set up my new little craft nook</b>. I had bought a table from Ikea up near my parents' house. But when it came time to come back here, it wouldn't fit in the car with all my other luggage! So, when my parents came down for the ceremony, they graciously brought it with them for me. I'll share a pic of what it looks like <a href="http://nimblenomad.blogspot.com/2011/08/my-new-little-craft-corner.html">tomorrow</a> when I have some natural light to take good photos. Hope everyone's relaxing during this weekend!<br />

It was pretty boring....learning about loan disbursement and repayment, where to park, getting IDs, etc.<br />
<br />
Thinking about starting an etsy shop because I'm having a bit of a surplus in thrifted items/pyrex.<br />
<br />
Pretty tired right now....can you tell? I'm still planning on doing a tutorial on how to make some thrifty artwork. Stay tuned! <br />
We just got back home from:<br />
<br />
1. Renovating a house with the boyf's parents<br />
2. Visiting my parents<br />
3. Having a reunion at the beach with some college friends!<br />
<br />
We had a great time but I'm ready to stop hopping around the east coast. Plus, school starts Monday....dun dun dun! First day of the first year of medical school! Am I excited? Mmmm....kind of. I'm excited to begin the first steps in my career as a doctor but I'm not excited to start cramming a mountain of information into my tiny wittle brain...<br />
<br />
Anyway, on our way home from....everywhere, I totally made a few stops and collected some thrifty items! Take a look see:<br />
<br />
I found this hounds-tooth fabric and thought it'd make some fabulous, modern throw pillows for the living room couch. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vNd82tIjpR8/TkV3Kww1U8I/AAAAAAAABK8/IKxc1hDKdOw/s1600/fabric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vNd82tIjpR8/TkV3Kww1U8I/AAAAAAAABK8/IKxc1hDKdOw/s640/fabric.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I was collecting these pots for three succulent plants I got from Ikea. As you can see one of them (on the right) died a little while we were away. Yes, I killed a succulent - the hardest plants to kill =(.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OpzfzJ6SleY/TkV3SjUDNaI/AAAAAAAABLA/GBykG3RL-Pg/s1600/pots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OpzfzJ6SleY/TkV3SjUDNaI/AAAAAAAABLA/GBykG3RL-Pg/s640/pots.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I thought this table cloth was pretty. I wanted to use it outdoors on our new balcony (which I'll share later) but it might have to stay indoors.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C7SiDTv6hPM/TkV3WD0y2II/AAAAAAAABLE/wcEl6B2iwPI/s1600/tablecloth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C7SiDTv6hPM/TkV3WD0y2II/AAAAAAAABLE/wcEl6B2iwPI/s640/tablecloth.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
Last, I saw this tray and I couldn't look away. It has no markings and I have no idea what it is...anyone is welcome to let me know. But the colors are awesome.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uX_hhA-MJpw/TkV3Yz30KoI/AAAAAAAABLI/9vn_bjaimHw/s1600/tray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uX_hhA-MJpw/TkV3Yz30KoI/AAAAAAAABLI/9vn_bjaimHw/s640/tray.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Here's the grand total:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qwQABjG06Pk/TkV4-D1A0tI/AAAAAAAABLQ/Fnd6nCJjDqU/s1600/Desktop3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qwQABjG06Pk/TkV4-D1A0tI/AAAAAAAABLQ/Fnd6nCJjDqU/s640/Desktop3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />

The renovation went well, it's not yet completely finished, but, I did finish my job at least! The floors we put in look great. I know I said I'd take pictures of my work but it completely slipped my mind while we worked morning til night. I mean, even my fingers were sore by the end of it!<br />
<br />
Anyway, right before we left in a rush last week to help out with the boyf's parents' renovation project I made sure to take some pictures of the thrifty finds that I found last week!<br />
<br />
Here they are:<br />
<br />
This mirrored tray for my bathroom to put my lotion, toothpaste, etc on. I now have two - they are so handy and beautiful at the same time!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WfcS-ewVy3c/TjsGhAra2pI/AAAAAAAABJQ/2bEWj6aa9jI/s1600/mirroredtray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WfcS-ewVy3c/TjsGhAra2pI/AAAAAAAABJQ/2bEWj6aa9jI/s640/mirroredtray.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I thought that my new collection of succulents would look grand in this pot I found:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mEd8SN26oN4/TjsGwLNjNkI/AAAAAAAABJU/x8CbcuKgm-k/s1600/pot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mEd8SN26oN4/TjsGwLNjNkI/AAAAAAAABJU/x8CbcuKgm-k/s640/pot.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
I found this eclectic collection of candlesticks to decorate my mantle. I love that they are not super matchy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xQJHNLqG8fA/TjsHBFXc5HI/AAAAAAAABJY/d-1UgDM91vM/s1600/candlesticks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xQJHNLqG8fA/TjsHBFXc5HI/AAAAAAAABJY/d-1UgDM91vM/s640/candlesticks.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
These two pieces of vintage pyrex are my faaaavorite finds of the week. One butterprint and one yellow cinderella bowl that I believe belongs in the yellow daisy cinderella set.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9Cuj4gT-Ww4/TjsKKovIK1I/AAAAAAAABJc/cus5oaCIuRM/s1600/pyrex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9Cuj4gT-Ww4/TjsKKovIK1I/AAAAAAAABJc/cus5oaCIuRM/s640/pyrex.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
This last find I had been searching for, for the new apartment. I needed a coffee table and I finally found the perfect thing (sorry for the blurry pic)! This vintage wooden table has definitely seen better days. I think it was probably used in somebody's art studio or something of that nature as there are a bunch of paint and glue stains. It doesn't look half bad though and kind of gives it a lot of character. Even so, I might sand it down and refinish it. What do you think?<br />
<br />

The boyf's parents are renovating a house in Philadelphia and working themselves to the bone trying to finish everything by Monday (which is not happening, by the way). So, we dropped everything and left Friday morning to make the 6 hour journey to Philadelphia to offer our young blood in the fine arts of home renovating.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HfUFevueKtI/TjTeBy51XPI/AAAAAAAABJM/ai0pgCoqZ8w/s1600/IMG_20110729_133805.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HfUFevueKtI/TjTeBy51XPI/AAAAAAAABJM/ai0pgCoqZ8w/s640/IMG_20110729_133805.jpg" width="478" /></a></div><br />
Yes, we followed a thrift store truck for part of the way. Was it frustratingly tempting and teasingly tormenting? Maybe. Did we stop at any thrift stores? No. Because I have some self control people. My boyfriend's family needed me and I wasn't going to dilly dally around! Yeesh!<br />
<br />
Did I mention that neither of us (my boyfriend or I) have much experience in the way of home renovation? Pfff...experience schmexperience. Today, I skillfully (yes, I received a couple of compliments) painted baseboard, installed window blinds, <i>and </i>began installing laminate flooring (which is turning out beautifully, I might add). <br />
<br />
Tomorrow I have to caulk (whatever that is...) in the new bathroom and finish the flooring. I'll probably do some more painting too. <br />
<br />
The house is turning out wonderfully and is very close to being done. I'll be sharing some pics of my handy work later! Stay tuned!<br />
<br />
Happy Sunday!</div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-2823807826147277722011-07-28T16:51:00.000-07:002011-07-28T21:31:47.846-07:00Thrifty Thursday - Serious Loot<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Happy Thursday folks! This past week I had a pretty hefty haul of thrifty finds. Usually I spend around $10 per thrifty thursday but this time I might have gotten a bit carried away.....teehee.<br />
<br />
Anyway, look what I found:<br />
<br />
Remember <a href="http://nimblenomad.blogspot.com/2011/06/thrifty-thursday.html">this lamp</a> I found a few weeks ago? I had <a href="http://nimblenomad.blogspot.com/2011/06/diy-lamp-shade-recover.html">DIY recovered the lamp shade</a> it came with but then I realized that the size and proportion were all wrong. So, when I found this vintage lamp shade for 75 cents I didn't think twice and scooped it up! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BQ4rGW1KE2M/TjFmtCqxBeI/AAAAAAAABII/WxkpRAWRBDI/s1600/lampshade.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BQ4rGW1KE2M/TjFmtCqxBeI/AAAAAAAABII/WxkpRAWRBDI/s640/lampshade.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
I also found these gorgeous tulip cereal bowls. I love tulip bowls but could never find them in a set. I don't think they are vintage (there is a Pier 1 marking on the bottom) but they are pretty nonetheless!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Zl12MDiXySM/TjHyMEYn2RI/AAAAAAAABIk/g3su8MQXK84/s512/tulipbowls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Zl12MDiXySM/TjHyMEYn2RI/AAAAAAAABIk/g3su8MQXK84/s640/tulipbowls.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
Next, I had been searching for some inexpensive way to make/get curtains for the new apartment. Then, I saw these brand new Ikea curtains at the thrift store! They turned out to be the perfect length and look great in my living room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4fQ9HZ1XNgM/TjHyGFydNwI/AAAAAAAABIc/-p0DoC7jEwM/s512/curtains1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4fQ9HZ1XNgM/TjHyGFydNwI/AAAAAAAABIc/-p0DoC7jEwM/s640/curtains1.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
This Spanish flamenco/festival poster with frame took me for $8. It's now sitting on my mantle and I'm loving it. It's relevant to my life too, since I lived in southern Spain for 5 months where flamenco is super popular =)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V0mUY3lvbHQ/TjHyNmSGWwI/AAAAAAAABIo/Axt1DidZZ7Y/s512/marahemmerly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V0mUY3lvbHQ/TjHyNmSGWwI/AAAAAAAABIo/Axt1DidZZ7Y/s640/marahemmerly.jpg" width="348" /></a></div><br />
I have a very cute art project in store for these round frames - stay tuned!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LoSO7fNBanA/TjHyN5UIqgI/AAAAAAAABIs/K4FFkB2e98s/s640/roundframes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LoSO7fNBanA/TjHyN5UIqgI/AAAAAAAABIs/K4FFkB2e98s/s640/roundframes.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
In the end, I always have to throw in a little something for the boyf. This budweiser goblet will go nicely in his collection =)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kMmTEYmhcLg/TjHyJJRLSzI/AAAAAAAABIg/sbkA0ZwKrVg/s512/budweisergoblet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kMmTEYmhcLg/TjHyJJRLSzI/AAAAAAAABIg/sbkA0ZwKrVg/s640/budweisergoblet.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
Lastly, I also found two of these small, clear pyrex bowls. They'll be great for serving when I make my chutneys and dips. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CtZ5dye3Bow/TjHudFKkGyI/AAAAAAAABIY/eEOTub57-Ag/s720/pyrexbowl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CtZ5dye3Bow/TjHudFKkGyI/AAAAAAAABIY/eEOTub57-Ag/s640/pyrexbowl.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MOsZh5l9YQg/TjH1cskhBqI/AAAAAAAABI8/rXqqL_fTsyY/s640/Desktop1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MOsZh5l9YQg/TjH1cskhBqI/AAAAAAAABI8/rXqqL_fTsyY/s640/Desktop1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>Hope you've had some good finds recently as well!</div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-20236491590669967142011-07-27T08:59:00.000-07:002011-07-27T09:04:33.291-07:00All That Glitters is Mostly Gold<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">I have a few silver, beaded, and other pieces as well =). But the point is, when we moved to a new apartment I had to find a different way to organize it all. My old jewelry box was becoming smaller and smaller over the years as I gained maturity and a lady's sense of style.... plus, it broke, womp womp. I wanted to find a way to organize everything so that some pieces didn't get lost in the pile and forgotten. Opportunity presented itself when we inherited my boyfriend's antique dresser that he grew up with and used as a child. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SJFIDY9zvLA/TjAv8VuQzcI/AAAAAAAABHQ/E9jmpnSV8j8/s1600/dresser2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SJFIDY9zvLA/TjAv8VuQzcI/AAAAAAAABHQ/E9jmpnSV8j8/s640/dresser2.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><br />
Isn't she a beauty? Anyway, I claimed the top two drawers and organized myself a little jewelry half-drawer. Using these images I found for inspiration (they have been pinned on my pinterest),<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J1cZHsf5yOI/TjAxrt_C4MI/AAAAAAAABHU/0PKy_aK4MaU/s1600/Recovered+Autosave.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J1cZHsf5yOI/TjAxrt_C4MI/AAAAAAAABHU/0PKy_aK4MaU/s640/Recovered+Autosave.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Top left: <a href="http://www.vogue.com/culture/article/apt-with-lsd-lauren-santo-domingo/#/gallery/apt-with-lsd-lauren-santo-domingo/8">Vogue</a> Top right: <a href="http://kelleymoorecreativemedia.blogspot.com/2010/08/space-of-my-own.html">Kelly Moore Creative Media</a> Bottom middle: <a href="http://www.articlesbase.com/remodeling-articles/closets-organizers-new-york-best-closet-designers-tips-1059148.html">Articlesbase</a></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>I concocted this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CNIIOI-sU88/TjAzbMmkV1I/AAAAAAAABHc/BFddMghrX7U/s1600/IMG_7893.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CNIIOI-sU88/TjAzbMmkV1I/AAAAAAAABHc/BFddMghrX7U/s640/IMG_7893.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
I was lucky enough to find those little trays of cubes at a thrift store for about 50 cents each, so I grabbed them when I saw them. I lined them with some non adhesive shelf liner cut to size and then organized all my jewelry in them! It's working out great so far, I can see everything I own and I love to look at my pretty jewels =).<br />
<br />
The only thing is, I hate the way my necklaces get all tangled when I store them together, so I'm thinking about a separate way to store those. Something like these from <a href="http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/">Urban Outfitters</a> would be grand:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uBGsGB-nzT0/TjA1MqZeTiI/AAAAAAAABHg/-7l66fJqZPI/s1600/Desktop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uBGsGB-nzT0/TjA1MqZeTiI/AAAAAAAABHg/-7l66fJqZPI/s640/Desktop.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Left: <a href="http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=17722281&color=007&itemdescription=true&navAction=jump&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS">Little Birch</a> Right: <a href="http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=21074042&navAction=jump&isProduct=true&parentid=MORE%20IDEAS&isProduct=true&cross-sell=true&guide-bn=true">Modern Branch</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>And they would be even grander if I could figure out a way to make them myself. A DIY project perchance? Perhaps.<br />
<br />
How do you store/organize your jewelry? </div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-73177928794052825952011-07-25T11:06:00.000-07:002011-07-25T11:21:45.544-07:00My Vintage Pyrex Collection<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">I started collecting pyrex early this year - probably around January - when I discovered three white milk glass butter dishes and one milk glass butter tub at a local thrift store. When I turned them over to look at the bottom, they all said Pyrex underneath. I was intrigued as I only knew Pyrex to make clear glass bakeware and the scientific glassware (yes...I'm a science geek) that I worked with both during and after college. So I brought these finds home and I did some research. That lead me to <a href="http://www.pyrexlove.com/">Pyrex Love</a> where I discovered the plethora of <a href="http://www.pyrexlove.com/vintage-pyrex-pattern-guide/">vintage pyrex patterns</a> that existed. Thus, my obsession with vintage pyrex began. Soon after, some how I stumbled upon the <a href="http://pyrexcollective.blogspot.com/">Pyrex Collective</a>, and I became a member of the <a href="http://pyrexcollective2.blogspot.com/">Pyrex Collective II</a> where I first started my blogging escapades (I liked it so much that I decided to start my own blog!). Anyway, since then I've amassed a small collection of vintage pyrex that the boyf tolerates quite well (he grins and bears it ;) ). <br />

My pyrex guide tells me the 3rd one from the left was introduced in 1941, but I don't know it the others are just as old. there are subtle differences. The last one on the extreme right may not be a pyrex measuring cup at all, it has no markings on the bottom except an engraved "mexico". Does anyone have any clue about that one? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Pinterest is basically a virtual pinboard where you can organize all the inspirational images you find on the internet under specific categories. I find it super useful to pin all the craft and sewing projects I want to try - that way I have it all down in one place and I don't forget about anything! Here's an example of what your homepage may look like (this is mine) when you use Pinterest.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6006/5970641170_5eea0f093e_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6006/5970641170_5eea0f093e_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's pretty user friendly - though I didn't like that it connected with my facebook account at first registration (you can unlink it later - I have a love/hate relationship with facebook). Anyway, go check out my pinterest boards! If you join, or you're already a member, be sure to follow me and I'll definitely follow you back!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Nonetheless, I did manage to sneak in some vacation thrifting on the way up to the beach a couple of weeks ago. Here's what I snagged during our roadtrip!<br />
<br />
This tin bowl was way too pretty to pass up. I think it will look grand on my yet to be purchased coffee table or in my entryway as a catch-all for keys, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vnuA8tw4ASg/TihK9mLLB9I/AAAAAAAABC8/XzcuNzcHQKk/s1600/IMG_7856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vnuA8tw4ASg/TihK9mLLB9I/AAAAAAAABC8/XzcuNzcHQKk/s640/IMG_7856.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
These jars were calling my name as soon as I saw them. The Atlas Wholefruit jar is missing the lid but looks awesome anyway. I think I'll use it as a pen/knitting needle/paintbrush/etc. holder on my (once again) yet to be purchased craft table. As for the tiny Le Parfait jar, I already have a larger one that I use in the kitchen to hold lentils and grains so maybe I'll use this one to hold some spices!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Gmrmqze0FvQ/TihMQok-dJI/AAAAAAAABDA/lJDKTcG84WM/s1600/IMG_7859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Gmrmqze0FvQ/TihMQok-dJI/AAAAAAAABDA/lJDKTcG84WM/s640/IMG_7859.jpg" width="628" /></a>Next, I found these still-in-the-packaging vintage bias tapes and I thought they would come in handy one day or another so I grabbed the prettiest colors I could find. Don't you just love?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W69_YcVDp6E/TihMvwLJYVI/AAAAAAAABDE/gqCedTJX3ig/s1600/IMG_7858.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W69_YcVDp6E/TihMvwLJYVI/AAAAAAAABDE/gqCedTJX3ig/s640/IMG_7858.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />
Last, this necklace was in the 4th of July display case and I thought hey, I might as well show some patriotic spirit and buy myself some jewelery!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WqFthMmXN2k/TihNES7DA6I/AAAAAAAABDI/AtCzEom-Ch0/s1600/IMG_7855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WqFthMmXN2k/TihNES7DA6I/AAAAAAAABDI/AtCzEom-Ch0/s640/IMG_7855.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Here's the total:<br />
<br />

I'm itching to get back into my thrifting game now that I need a few more pieces to furnish this new apartment, so stay tuned for more thrifting adventures!</div>Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-25262178133525996502011-07-19T14:04:00.000-07:002011-07-19T14:55:34.041-07:00A DIY Wedding (Travel Day 15)I'm finally back home after a 2 week vacation/visit with the family (both mine and the boyf's)! We got back on Sunday night, but, being back home means continuing our move to a new apartment....and to put it politely....moving sucks! To save some money we're using my little 4-door, 14 year old Honda Civic to move all our stuff, so as you can probably imagine, it's been taking a bit of time... But that's okay because we've got 'til the end of this month to finish, plus, we're only moving a block away =). I'll be super glad when the back and forth is over though, that's for sure.<br />
<br />
Before coming back home, we attended a wedding this past Saturday. The boyf's cousin was getting married and we'd heard that she was doing it totally DIY and on a SERIOUS budget. So, being a budget conscious gal myself I was super interested to see what she, her fiance, and her family had planned!<br />
<br />
It was quite a small wedding with no more than 50 people in attendance. It took place in the bride's mother's backyard which was beautifully kept with a pool and all! Some of the kids who brought their bathing suits jumped in during the reception.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4MFI0g74-D8/TiXuD6PchMI/AAAAAAAABCQ/jV0_7UG5_2w/s1600/IMG_7812.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4MFI0g74-D8/TiXuD6PchMI/AAAAAAAABCQ/jV0_7UG5_2w/s640/IMG_7812.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OcufYggQBlI/TiXuNMdZKFI/AAAAAAAABCU/OUNMrza7m5k/s1600/IMG_7814.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OcufYggQBlI/TiXuNMdZKFI/AAAAAAAABCU/OUNMrza7m5k/s640/IMG_7814.JPG" width="496" /></a></div><br />
The groom's father is a pastor so naturally, he officiated the evening ceremonies. Great way to save some cash! When it got dark, the lights and candles were lit for some romance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-md_Cyb-cExg/TiXvsNj3-RI/AAAAAAAABCY/8VEwRiZVW-0/s1600/IMG_7821.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-md_Cyb-cExg/TiXvsNj3-RI/AAAAAAAABCY/8VEwRiZVW-0/s640/IMG_7821.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AptHFUae8cc/TiXvvoHx8rI/AAAAAAAABCc/Rri3fXJipAY/s1600/IMG_7822.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AptHFUae8cc/TiXvvoHx8rI/AAAAAAAABCc/Rri3fXJipAY/s640/IMG_7822.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The center pieces were simple with a mixed bouquet in jars. Some of the food was home made and some of it was catered. There was plenty of beer and wine on hand in coolers too. It was a great wedding, fun and casual which totally matched the personalities of the couple.<br />
<br />
Hope everyone is having a great start to the week! As soon as we're finished moving, get ready for some budget decorating posts!Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-15667700394245087142011-07-12T21:55:00.000-07:002011-07-13T08:12:25.495-07:00Jerry the pug (Travel day 11)It's been a while since I've been able to post. My apologies! But, being at home with the family keeps me pretty busy...busy getting spoiled rotten. <br />
<br />
Mostly I've been going on shopping sprees with my mom at the outlets and the mall (There are such great sales going on right now it seems!), eating my mom's fabulous cooking (I totally ate way too much today - there goes my diet...), and enjoying some good 'ole parental lovin'. Thus, I'm being spoiled rotten, still, at the ate of 24 (going on 25). But I'm totes loving it!<br />
<br />
And the best part is I get to spend some Quality Time with him:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tgi1y0XIeqw/Th0eE-v8GTI/AAAAAAAABCA/edP6uqpU1gk/s1600/IMG_20110312_215415.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="454" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tgi1y0XIeqw/Th0eE-v8GTI/AAAAAAAABCA/edP6uqpU1gk/s640/IMG_20110312_215415.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
This is Jerry, our family dog. My brother and I brought him home when I was still in high school (with some aiding and abetting from our father) and thrust him into our mother's life (a former dog-o-phobic who now sees him as one of her children, the most spoiled of the lot I might add). He's now 8 years old and from time to time I can see his age catching up with him, which makes me extremely fearful. But, I shake that feeling off quickly and just dump a whole lot of loving on him (I mean how can I not? Look at that face!). <br />
<br />
Sometimes I feel if Jerry could talk, he would mainly engage me in conversation about bread and what he could possibly do to acquire more of it (bread happens to be a four letter word in our house - it must be spelled out as to not let Jerry hear its name, or he <i>will</i> come running). Then we would talk about how I might be able to help in this acquisition of some kind, any kind (!) of food as well. The conversation would slowly progress into passionate arguments about the benefits of excessive amounts of sleep to animal-kind which would eventually lead into how sleeping in someone's lap has been proven to be significantly better for the psyche than sleeping anywhere else. Finally, I think he would conclude with a talk on how urinating in every possible location is important so....you know....so you can smell it later and remember you peed there.<br />
<br />
I <3 you Jerry.Akihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02330188955732088389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014682225082729212.post-68801366482704183602011-07-08T20:20:00.000-07:002011-07-08T20:20:18.698-07:00Travel Day 6Yesterday was beach day! We enjoyed a day at the beach, swam in the ocean, and rinsed off the salt in the pool.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-grOhfZe7Pro/ThfBafN53nI/AAAAAAAABBA/pox74HgKpqU/s1600/IMG_7806.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-grOhfZe7Pro/ThfBafN53nI/AAAAAAAABBA/pox74HgKpqU/s640/IMG_7806.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X7pWw4WTCRU/ThfBej0Dv5I/AAAAAAAABBE/7jHFc4a1baU/s1600/IMG_7808.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X7pWw4WTCRU/ThfBej0Dv5I/AAAAAAAABBE/7jHFc4a1baU/s640/IMG_7808.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
We even ended the day with quite a few dolphin spottings!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XeWHoAyndiE/ThfDhaVpm5I/AAAAAAAABBI/04XgOCcYGZw/s1600/IMG_7809.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="390" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XeWHoAyndiE/ThfDhaVpm5I/AAAAAAAABBI/04XgOCcYGZw/s640/IMG_7809.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
They were swimming uncharacteristically close to shore. The picture doesn't show it very well because it was hard to capture with the 'ole point-and-shoot. But, they were beautiful!<br />
<br />
Later in the day I headed off to the parents' house (where I am now) while the boyf stayed at the beach. He'll be heading off to his own parents' house tomorrow. We'll meet back up again next Friday for a little Harry Potter and a wedding!<br />
<br />
Look what my parents gave me upon my return home - a graduation/getting into med school gift. I love them so much!<br />
